Due to the development of cross-disciplinary communication in both theory and practice, film has become one of the most effective media for documenting and reimagining the formation and meaning of architecture, place, and urban space. A new generation of artists has emerged worldwide, empowered by the lowered threshold of digital technology and the pervasive influence of visual culture, opening up fresh possibilities for online dissemination. Responding to this global wave, the Arc en Rêve Centre d’Architecture in Bordeaux transformed its main gallery into a “Screening Room Club” in 2023, blending the formats of an architectural film festival and a traditional exhibition. The initiative explored how moving images can circulate architectural case studies and revealed the diverse ways film mediates the spatial aura of architecture.
Co-curated with the Arc en Rêve Centre d’Architecture, this exhibition extends Taiwan’s ongoing curatorial discourse on architecture, cinema, and the urban experience. Drawing on Taiwan’s own visual culture and academic collaborations, it brings together a selection of works from the original Bordeaux exhibition alongside Taiwanese counterparts, to examine the intertwined mediations among architecture, urban space, the moving image, and the museum, while addressing the urgent issues shared by contemporary architectural and visual cultures. The exhibition unfolds through three major themes centered on the dialogue between the real and the virtual in architecture and film, complemented by explorations of architectural light and atmosphere, and urban infrastructures. Each theme is further divided into three units, with films rotated throughout the exhibition period. As the seasons change, visitors will encounter new configurations of works, creating an ever-evolving dialogue of images, spaces, and ideas.
