Artist Statement

Following the core concept “biocentric” from ecological psychology, Contours presents the multi-dialogue between nature and humans, time and recorded memory through the medium of dance film.

The main context of Contours is “the holism of human beings and universe.” The whole film was shot in Lake George (Weereewa), which, at five million years old, is the fifth oldest lake in the world.

In the ancient and vast wilderness, how can human beings exist or integrate into nature? Confronting the changing environment, how can dancers find eternal kinetic energy? In comparison with nature, how can insignificant humankind contend with the boundless power of life?

Through different generations, races, and the quality of dance, the director Peng reveals her eternal inquiries to humans and nature, and embodies the grandiose land/ body-scape crossing time and space.

Dancecology

Combined the idea of “dance” and “ecology,” Dancecology is a performing group founded in 2009, which consists of the artistic director Hsiao-yin Peng and her team. Combining performing and visual art, Dancecology’s works break the restrictions of stage, and present the unique atmosphere of environmental theatre. Through the cross-over cooperative creation based on the ecological concepts “circulation” and “symbiosis,” they advocate the concepts of mutual-nourishing and self-curing in the ecological system, which present unconventional issues of nature and humanity’s concerns. The form of Dancecology’s work includes theatre, site-specific or environmental theatre, video art, dance film and installations. The company has toured all over the world, including USA, Australia, Portugal, Italy, Nepal, Malaysia and Macau.
