Artist Statement

Flower of Time: Universal Correspondence is a hybrid space created with electromechanical devices and digitally generative panoramic animation.

My creative practice of the Flower of Time series was inspired by the correspondence between microcosms and macrocosms, a delicate subject of esotericism in both occidental and oriental cultural history. For example, the theory of Five Elements assumes that the world is in a state of dynamic equilibrium, in which all aspects of human life are orientated towards the harmonious interactions that underpin such equilibrium; to wit, the correspondence between our physical activities and the way of the universe. The philosophical ideas of “seeing the whole world in a grain of sand” and “as above, so below” embedded in this series coincide with the notion of “correspondence” in Western esotericism.

Perfectly blending different techniques such as digital fabrication, microchip-based electromechanical control, data mapping, and real-time image projection design, Flower of Time: Universal Correspondence is a space in which temporal data are constantly transformed into physical experiences. All the audio-visual elements in this space (e.g. colors, forms, rhythms and sounds) are generated from the subtle nuances per second. With its brilliant mechanical installation performance and animation projection, this work is dedicated to highlighting the richness and possibilities of the present, which not only immerses the viewers in the breath of time, but also manifests the philosophical tradition of reflecting the general trend in one tiny clue, or, observing the accumulation of fine dust that embodies the boundless universe.
