《逐格之夢:從書頁到銀幕的動畫世界》 ● 展名:《逐格之夢:從書頁到銀幕的動畫世界》Dreaming in Frames: From Page to Screen — The World of Animation in Books ● 展期:2026.08.11-2027.01.17 ● 展間 Venue:國立臺灣美術館 藝術圖書中心 Art Library, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (NTMoFA) ● 策展人Curator:郭秭鈞 Ellen Guo ● 視覺設計 Visual Design:李俊儀 LI Chun-Yi ● 展場執行Exhibition Execution:宋珮瑄 SUNG Pei-Hsuan ● 展覽論述: 逐格,作為一種閱讀方式 Frame by frame, page by page — the dream takes shape in repetition. Curatorial Statement Frame by Frame, Page by Page “Frame by frame” is both a way of watching animation and a way of reading it. Animation divides time into individual frames, allowing still images to appear in motion through rhythm, interval, and perception. Reading also depends on the active movement of the reader, who turns pages, pauses, and connects meanings. Pages and frames therefore share a temporality: neither is complete on its own; both are activated through the viewer’s gaze, gesture, and imagination. For this reason, the exhibition places books at its centre. From animation principles and storyboarding to the historical threads of Taiwanese animation and comics, and from animation art and story worlds to social and cultural ways of seeing, the selected titles form a body of knowledge that visitors can move through in space. The journey begins with the question “How does animation move?”, continues through “What traces does animation leave?”, and opens onto “How does animation shape our imagination?” Pages and frames share a secret: without someone moving through them, neither truly exists.

Frame by Frame: From Page to Screen presents animation through books. Bringing together 39
Chinese- and English-language titles, the exhibition transforms the Art Library Center into a space for
reading, lingering, and looking. Rather than treating film screenings as its sole point of entry, it invites
visitors to encounter animation through pages, images, texts, and bibliographies—and to consider
how animation is made, remembered, and continues to shape the ways we see the world.
“Frame by frame” refers both to animation’s individual frames and to the rhythm of reading.
Animation makes still images move through time and perception; reading, likewise, produces meaning
through turning pages, pauses, and associations. Guided by the idea of “from page to screen,” the
exhibition treats books as the first site for entering animation, making visible the creative processes,
industrial conditions, historical contexts, and cultural imaginations behind animated works.
How does animation come to life?
Frame by frame, still images begin to move through time, rhythm, and perception. Page by page, a book similarly comes alive as readers turn, pause, read, and imagine. Dreaming in Frames: From Page to Screen — The World of Animation in Books begins with this connection between the animated frame and the printed page, inviting visitors to rediscover the world of animation through books.
With 39 Chinese- and foreign-language titles at its core, the exhibition explores animation principles, storyboarding and production, Taiwanese animation and comics, the development of animation around the world, as well as animation aesthetics, storytelling, and cultural studies. In doing so, it transforms the Art Library Center into a space for reading, lingering, looking, and thinking about animation.
The exhibition unfolds in three sections, forming a journey from understanding how animation moves, to tracing what animation leaves behind, and finally exploring how animation shapes our imagination.
Section I | Between Frames and Movement — Animation Principles, Storyboarding, and Production
Every movement begins with a single still frame.
From animation principles and storyboarding to character design and production workflows, this section explores how artists use observation, drawing, performance, editing, and technical processes to organize time and movement, transforming still images into moving images filled with rhythm and life.
Section II | Traces and Memory — Taiwanese Animation, Industry Memory, and Cross-Cultural Exchange
Every trace of animation reflects the time in which it was created.
Beginning with the histories of Taiwanese animation and comics, this section extends to Japanese animation, influential directors, and the broader history of animation worldwide. Through books, visitors can trace the paths animation has taken across regions, industries, and cultures, while reconsidering the place of Taiwanese animation within this larger history.
Section III | Perception and Imagination — Animation Aesthetics, Story Worlds, and Cultural Perspectives
Animation is more than entertainment—it is a way of experiencing the world, remembering our lives, and imagining who we are.
The selection brings together both library holdings and specially selected titles, ranging from practical guides to animation and storyboarding to works on Taiwanese animation and comics, global animation history, and cultural studies. Together, they reveal animation as a rich field of artistic practice, historical memory, and cultural inquiry.
The exhibition will also be accompanied by a special lecture on Taiwanese animation and screenings of classic animated films, extending the experience from the bookshelf to the screen and into shared conversation. Further programme details will be announced separately.
