The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts has launched the immersive artwork The Priceless Painting: The Boy Chasing Light in Paris. The piece is adapted from the museum's 2021 graphic novel of the same name, which depicts the life of Taiwan's pioneering artist Yang San-lang, and features the creative collaboration of the original comic artist, HOM. With a runtime of approximately 6 minutes and 45 seconds, the project utilizes 360-degree VR video technology and 3D modeling while preserving the original hand-drawn 2D texture, vividly recreating Yang San-lang's journey to Paris in pursuit of artistic value.
In collaboration with the National Museum of Taiwan Comics, this project features a short-term special exhibition at the museum. By combining the VR experience, displays of the original comic, and on-site viewing services, it invites audiences to experience the translation of the narrative from page to immersive screen within a dedicated space for comic culture.
Comics establish their narrative rhythm through two-dimensional paneling, characterization, and dialogue, whereas VR envelopes the audience in the scene using panoramic visuals, spatial audio, and environmental depth. This exhibition revolves around the triad of 'Original Comic × Artist's Backstory × Immersive VR.' It invites visitors to look beyond the printed page and step intimately into the lived moments and emotional landscapes of Yang San-lang.
Grounded in NTMOFA’s institutional research and publications, and fueled by NMTC’s vibrant exhibition space and comic-advocacy energy, this initiative seamlessly weaves Taiwanese art history, comic artistry, and new media curation into a unified experiential path—broadening the horizons of how we perceive and connect with Taiwan's cultural heritage.
