Theater of Puppetry__Tradtion Inspires, Technology Reimagined.

Theater of  Future Puppetry transforms traditional Taiwanese glove puppetry into an immersive interactive experience through VR and gesture-controlled puppetry technology. By integrating virtual reality, gesture recognition, and real-time puppeteering systems, the work offers audiences a new way to engage with and experience Taiwanese glove puppetry culture.

The project extends the research and digital archival achievements of the NYCU Glove Puppetry Digital Museum, transforming existing cultural research into an interactive format that audiences can actively participate in. Through manipulating virtual puppets with their hands, visitors can experience the  characters movement, puppeteering logic, and performance rhythm of glove puppetry, fostering a deeper understanding of its cultural significance.

Curatorial Concept

Centered on the idea of “contemporary reinterpretation of traditional puppetry,” the project emphasizes that glove puppetry is not merely a performance to be watched, but a complex knowledge system encompassing character logic, embodied techniques, and cultural memory.

Through VR and gesture-based puppeteering mechanisms, audiences shift from passive viewers to active participants. By engaging physically with the puppetry system, they are able to experience the operational methods of glove puppetry firsthand, gaining insight into its aesthetics and cultural meanings.

This approach lowers the barrier for the public to engage with traditional glove puppetry while enabling the intricate experience of puppeteering—often difficult to fully convey through static exhibitions—to be reinterpreted through immersive interaction. For museums, this format also offers a new exhibition model that integrates digital technology, cultural education, and audience participation.

Collaboration institution

The collaborating institution, Yang MIng Chiao Tung University Glove Puppetry Digital Museum, is an important platform established by National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University for the preservation, digitization, and applied development of glove puppetry artifacts. The museum is built upon extensive research and archival work initiated after the university received a large collection of glove puppetry-related artifacts from the Seden Foudation  in 2019.

Beyond artifact preservation and digitization, the museum emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches that expand glove puppetry culture into educational outreach, community sharing, and new interpretive practices, allowing traditional art forms to continuously generate contemporary relevance.

Theater of Future Puppetry was developed from this foundation. Rather than simply presenting existing digital museum content, the work further transforms research outcomes, archival contexts, and cultural translation experiences into an immersive interactive artwork that audiences can directly participate in.
