  1. Rationale

In the 19th century, avant-garde art emerged as a creative movement characterized by artistic innovation and a spirit of experimentation, positioning itself in opposition to established academic conventions. By the early 20th century, this movement gave rise to successive artistic movements and stylistic formations, which evolved with notable speed and diversity.

Around the same time, these ideas were transmitted to East and Southeast Asia through the efforts of writers, artists, and overseas students, as well as through print materials and other media. Upon their arrival, they were reinterpreted through the artists’ individual perspectives and integrated into local cultural contexts, resulting in transformations in both the theoretical underpinnings and stylistic expressions of modernist painting.

At the same time, the influence of different artistic movements varied across regions, with some emerging as dominant strands of modernist painting and others remaining at the margins. Within the art historical frameworks of different locales, what roles did these forms of modernism assume? And what significance do they continue to hold in the subsequent trajectory of artistic development? These are questions that warrant closer examination.

The development of Taiwanese art has been closely interwoven with that of neighboring countries in East and Southeast Asia. In recent years, the exchanges between Taiwan and these regions in the development of modernist painting have drawn increasing scholarly attention. In the prewar period, avant-garde art entered the view of Taiwanese artists through artist groups and traveling exhibitions. Although some avant-garde works appeared in official exhibitions, their influence remained limited. After the war, this undercurrent of avant-garde practice once again flowed into Taiwan, this time through artists who had been born in China. At the same time, artists based in Taiwan continued to pursue prewar interests in the plastic arts or created work in response to international exhibitions and art circles. As global political dynamics shifted, various strains of Western modernism exerted a more direct influence on Taiwan. In parallel, exchanges with Chinese diaspora artists offered local audiences and artists glimpses of modernist art in Southeast Asia.

This symposium invites scholars who have engaged with this field in recent years and is organized around five major topics: “East Asian Localization and Distant Land Experiences of Surrealism,” “The Driving Force of Modernism — Cross-Media and Cross-Cultural,” “Understanding and Practicing Modern Art Theory and Knowledge Systems,” “Beyond ‘-Isms’—Reconsidering the Position of the Artist” and “Responses to and Interactions with Prewar Taiwanese Artistic Currents.” In addition, the symposium has invited distinguished art historians Masahiro Ushiroshoji (Director of the Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art, Japan and Professor Emeritus at Kyushu University) and Kuang-yi Chen (Director of the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and Professor at the National Taiwan University of Arts) to deliver keynote lectures on modernist trends in Asia and Europe, respectively. Through the explorations and perspectives offered by research on avant-garde art across East and Southeast Asia, the conference seeks to further examine and reflect on its development in Taiwan, with the aim of generating broader conceptual frameworks and identifying new directions for future research.
