Exhibition Introduction:
Taiwan’s representation at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia will feature the theme, “NON-Belief: Taiwan Intelligens of Precarity.” A curatorial project by National Cheng Kung University, the theme responds to the title of this year’s Biennale,“Intelligens. Natural. Artificial. Collective”and explores the role of “Intelligens” in contemporary architecture and environment, while also re-examining Taiwan's spatial strategies in the context of globalization and fluctuating geopolitics. The curatorial concept is inspired by Robert Smithson’s theory of “Non-sites” and highlights the absence, displacement, and binary dialectics of landscape, reflecting on the relationship between architecture, the physical environment, and representation through abstract structures. The “NON” also echoes the binary dialectic found in the Eastern philosophical concepts of "absence" and" presence."
The exhibition seeks to identify and construct a gray area within the binary dialectic of “belief” and “not belief” unique to Taiwan, uncovering various expressions of “Intelligens” and its impact on spatial governance. The exploration will focus on three aspects: Efficiency, Technology, and Control. The concept of “island” is adopted for the design of the exhibition space, presenting the tensions between “belief” and “non-belief” through the relationship between “island – archipelago – peninsula” with the complex relationship between technology, environment, and social space examined.
