Concept/

Taiwan Craft Stage

The craft sector in Taiwan has evolved over time as economical, political and social changes were brought to the society. Introducing competition serves to be one of the many supportive means to cope with industrial development. The theme to the exhibition, entitled the “Taiwan Craft Stage,” moreover, displays various creative aspects of the Taiwan Craft Competition for the past 28 years, and at the same time, puts on real eye-catchers surrounding the stage concept.

The “performance” on the stage, in this regard, refers to cultivating talents in the craft sector through holding competitions for authors to send objects they created for an award. The platform brought talents, along with craft objects, together from past competitions, putting on an open show for all authors. When it comes to translating the meaning behind craft objects, the creative content – mainly the aesthetics, concepts, emotions and issues – is particularly highlighted. The craft has its roots planted in the soil and natural environment of Taiwan. The culture regenerates and aggregates as creative objects translate, care and cultivate the land. Moreover, as the “plus (+, Plus)” suggested in the Chinese title of the exhibition, it points out future potential for the craft. The craft will no longer serve the purpose of emphasizing the creative aspect of objects to simply fulfill the authors’ satisfaction and make their ends meet. It has gradually expanded its scope to the public sphere and society to appeal to the contemporary values and spirituality. In addition to that, there are also cross-border creative attempts with the Metacraft and multiple contents as well as applications integrated in the virtual and actual states. The craft needs to be a holistic ecosystem to constantly and organically voice out its intricate responses to the society and to create a genuine cycle and sustainable environment for the future.

Taiwanese craft, characterized by its belief in natural and recyclable materials, manual practices of the craft, the ethics of the working process and method, the freedom to creation, cultural heritage, industrial development and social welfare practice, in fact, advocates Taiwan’s own “green craft” by associating with ecology, propagation, harmony and balance in terms of color psychology. To sum up, there are nine main values that the craft asserts. They are “conscientiousness-driven spirit,” “work ethics,” “pleasant laboring” as well as “life aesthetics” – when it comes down to practice – and intrinsically-speaking, “nature,” “cycle,” “balance,” “tolerance” and “vitality.”

This exhibition not only looks back in history but also looks forward to the future, announcing in the occasion that the Taiwan Craft Competition is giving way to the Taiwan Craft Award in norm to echo contemporary and future development. The award not only encourages individuals’ creative work but also praises researchers, educators and collaborators alike for their efforts to pave the way for developing the craft sector. It embodies the decentralization idea and has embarked on the public trends of common good, common creativity and common prosperity to voice out to the future.

Structure

Shape and composition constitute the Structure, which is usually the image perceived directly by the visual sense. It usually involves categories, such as realistic as well as life-like simulation, abstract geometry, single component, plural combination and textures as well as sense of touch in norm to express the aesthetics or to echo creative thinking.

Norm

Norm refers to a system which consists of ethical dogma and relationships. The interlocking systems include social or cultural structures, systems, relationships, customs, values and conventional practices. In terms of creative performance, it reflects the rules or norms adopted by the authors when they cope with internal or external factors. In addition to that, it might be expressive of the opposite ideas in relation to chaos and disorder, such as restraint vs. liberation as well as symmetry vs. asymmetry.

Contemporariness

Contemporariness constitutes the concept of the present moment and the openness of “pointing to the future.” The so-called ‘creative contemporariness’ expresses mainly the concepts that care about life, sustainability of the social environment, democracy as well as freedom, ethnic groups as well as gender differences, technical application and globalization. However, the very feature of contemporariness does not include pursuing perfection. On the other hand, it is against traditional notion of beauty. It even advocates the defected as well as unfinished, and reflection as well as criticism.

Sociality

Sociality is the characteristic that is beneficial to social development through thinking and activities. At the same time, it establishes single or multiple relationships through contact and interaction in social manners. It is characterized by altruistic behaviors, collaboration, and self-awareness.
