Looking back at Poland’s history, foreign armies frequently took advantage of the country’s flat terrain and invaded, causing much pain and suffering for the Polish people; however, it taught the country how to survive between different regimes. Wieniawski, a 19th-century Polish violinist and composer, appeared to be a testament to the latter. Wieniawski taught at the Brussels Conservatory, where his style was passed on to Auer and Heifetz, and St. Petersburg after studying at the Paris Conservatory. The violinist influenced violin performance in Russia and is regarded as one of the founders of the Russian violin school. Wieniawski wrote the Violin Concerto No. 2 performed in this concert while in Russia. The Violin Concerto No. 2 performed in this concert was written by Wieniawski when he was in Russia. This piece is considered Wieniawski's best work due to its strong and sophisticated style. Rubinstein conducted the premiere in 1862, and the composer personally played the solo. Given that Wieniawski was the most outstanding violinist at the time, and that this was a solo piece composed and performed by him, the technique required for this piece is unquestionably advanced.

NTSO’s associate concertmaster Chen-Han Tsai will perform the violin solo of this piece during the concert. Tsai obtained his Ph. D. at the Eastman School of Music and has competed in several international violin competitions, including the Henryk Wieniawski International Violin Competition.

The orchestrated version of Brahms’ Piano Quartet No. 1 is the other great composition featured in this concert. When it premiered in Hamburg in 1861, Clara Schumann performed it on the piano, and Brahms personally performed it the following year in Vienna. Brahms had great respect for Clara Schumann’s emotions and piano expertise, thus he must have put in great thought when composing this piece. Schönberg later rearranged the original composition, transforming it into a profound and colorful version that sounds like it was written for orchestra but also has the delicacy of chamber music.
