Yi-lin Hsu | Soprano

A native of the Republic of China, Dr. Hsu began her musical studies at an early age with studies in piano, voice and dramatic arts.  After receiving her first diploma at the World College of Journalism in Taipei, she went to the United States to study vocal performance at the University of Michigan.  After receiving her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from the University of Michigan, she earned her doctorate at the University of California, Santa Barbara.  Three of her most influential professors include Elizabeth Mannion, Eugene Bossart, and Martial Singher.

Dr. Hsu has played leading roles in numerous operas, including Le Nozze di Figaro, Cosi Fan Tutte, Madama Butterfly, Sunday Excursion, La Boheme, La Traviata, L’enfant et les sortileges, Der Fliegender Holander, Fidelio, Der Freischutz, The Village Singer, Apothecary, Falstaff, and the Chinese classical operas, West Chamber Story and Wen Tien-hsiang and Kublai Khan.  Oratorios and symphonic and choral works performed include Haydn, Creation; Handel, Messiah; the Poulenc, Gloria; Bruckner, Te Deum; Requiems by Brahms, Verdi, and Faure; Beethoven, Symphony No. 9, and Missa Solemnis; Mahler, Symphonies No. 2, and No. 8; Mendelssohn, Sacred Cantata, Op. 42 and Symphonic Cantata, Op. 52; J. Tours have taken her to the United States, Canada, Italy, Holland, Belgium, France, the Philippines, Japan, Korea, South Africa, Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong, the People’s Republic of China, Australia, and New Zealand.

Gerald Carpenter, of the Santa Barbara Independence, wrote of Dr. Hsu’s singing: “She has a lovely voice: sweet, pure and true.  She sang the Strauss, “Four Last Songs,” with technical perfection and a surprising amount of insight—surprising inasmuch as she is far too young to be entirely at ease in this particular dispensation.

In addition to her successful singing career, Dr. Hsu is also a very dedicated teacher. Many of her students have been international competition winners and have been invited to give concerts and sing operatic roles both in Taiwan and abroad.  She is also on the Board of Directors of the Chinese Vocal Artists’ Association in Taiwan.  From 2002-2006 Dr. Hsu taught at the Taipei National University of the Arts as a visiting professor agreement with Tunghai University.  Dr. Hsu has now returned to Tunghai University as an associate professor in voice, mean time she continues to teach at the Taipei National University of the Arts and National Taiwan Normal University.
