Art and culture take their root in land, people and society. They are from the power that comes within; thus this power enables art works to encompass a wide variety of cultural elements. Locality, dissimilarity, and diversity converge and leave their legacies to form the richness of cultural soil and this led to an artistic world which is all-embracing and visionary. This year, the 2010 Taiwan Biennial establishes itself on that fruitful achievement of its forerunner, branding itself with the theme “Yes, Taiwan,” to investigate the population consisting of art exhibitions and works in Taiwan since 2008 until now. With digging deeper into the population, the biennial brings forward 7 subtopics which illustrate Taiwan’s present art world. To build a field of heteroglossia, the exhibition adopts two ways to form its artistic content, Invitation and Open-call for Entries, expecting to sort out the diverse trends of contemporary visual art in Taiwan. The aims is to provide a platform of dialogue for Taiwanese and international artists. So Taiwan can see the world and the world to see Taiwan from fresh angles.
With no exception, art works in different eras reflect on their contemporary environment. Synchronicity is the motif of discourse in the second Taiwan Biennial. Selecting a specific slice of time (from 2008 onward), the exhibition provides an in-depth and comprehensive analysis of the development of visual art in Taiwan. It explores the aesthetic trend of the Taiwanese art works in recent year in seven different aspects, including Local Breakthroughs, A New-style Visual Art Space: Connecting and Transforming, Variations on Image Art, Innovation in Oriental Materials, New Trends in Easel Paintings, Rethinking the Language of Installation, and Naïve Approaches to Art. Audience will see different artists’ reflection upon diversified issues ranging from art, society and environment, etc. And thus the exhibition is a testimony of the cultural agency in modern Taiwan and how it is expressed by the Taiwanese artists in the new era with their acute aesthetic soul, innovative artistic language and profound humanistic concerns.
In other words, 2010 Taiwan Biennial aims to undertake the forerunner’s pioneer spirit prevailing over the course of the art development in Taiwan. It traces the artistic development from traditional route to innovative attempts and keenly observes the diversified trends present in the contemporary art works in Taiwan. Those trends touch upon the sense of community, the aesthetic influence brought by new types of art space, innovation of traditional art materials, wider variety of the media used for easel painting, the transformation of photography and video media, the development of the language in installation and conceptual art and the new possibilities of naïve art. The infinity of cultural vitality is embodied in these works, and audience can see different cultural elements blend and affect each other.
Ocean whispers to Formosa, the beautiful island. Taiwan is an island with rich and diversified history. We are confident that it is because of art that we can come together while upholding the value of openness and diversity of our culture. And with this colorful cultural richness, we can confidently announce to the world --- Yes Taiwan!
