This concert will be conducted by Vienna Philharmonic flute concertmaster Karl-Heinz Schütz, who is also the soloist. Starting from the flute and focusing on woodwind instruments, this concert will offer a new interpretation to the audience.

While the overture of Mozart’s opera Die Zauberflöte does not focus on the flute and involves the entire orchestra, the flute is still mentioned in the title and the premiere of this opera was in Vienna, indicating the flute and the style of Vienna is still prominent in this composition. Schütz also selected 18th-century French composer Devienne’s Flute Concerto No. 7 in E minor for this concert. France has been a significant place for woodwind instruments since the 17th century. Steadfastly carrying on the classic flute traditions, Devienne survived the tumultuous French Revolution and later taught the instrument at the newly established Paris Conservatory of Music. This Flute Concerto No. 7 in E minor has both the structure of the classics and a dynamic flair, aptly presenting the sensitivity and unrest of the era.

The other two pieces performed in this concert are both chamber music pieces for woodwinds. Gounod’s Petite Symphony in B-flat Major for 9 Wind Instruments requires one flute, two oboes, two bassoons, two clarinets, and two French horns. Although it was written at the end of the 19th century, the composition still displays the clarity of the classics and its delicate arrangement restrains the romantic spirit so that the piece is not too decadent. Richard Strauss’ Suite for 13 Wind Instruments in B-flat Major is written for thirteen musicians. It opens with a prelude and is continued with a romance, a gavotte, and ends with an introduction and fugue. The structure shows the piece’s connections with Baroque music and is also an example of how this concert is about finding the balance between the restrained classics and dynamic emotions.
