The trajectory of twentieth-century Taiwanese women’s art traces a captivating shift—from passive “objects of observation” to expressive, “autonomous voices.” Drawing from the permanent collection of the National Museum of History, this exhibition brings together 60 female artists whose works chart this dynamic evolution. Tracing their creative pathways reveals how these women transcended the cultural constraints of their respective eras. Moving from quiet self-expression to bold self-awareness—from unseen presences to assertive creators—they claimed their agency and cultivated distinct artistic vocabularies. In doing so, they collectively reshaped the landscape of Taiwanese art history, leaving an indelible mark on the museum’s legacy.
The exhibition features 60 figurative and abstract works spanning ink painting, calligraphy, and Western medium practices. Tracing the narrative arc of women’s artistic development in Taiwan, the show unfolds across three thematic chapters: “Historical Retrospect: Pioneers of a New Era in Women’s Art,” “Elegance and Transition: Tradition and Stylistic Evolution,” and “Modernity and Integration: Personal Breakthroughs and Artistic Expression.” Together, these sections illuminate the rich diversity across generations of women artists within the collection, celebrating the vibrant modernity of their vision.
In alignment with the museum’s broader initiative, “Reducing Exhibition Carbon Footprints: Advancing Sustainable Curating 2.0,” the exhibition design actively merges cultural presentation with environmental stewardship. The spatial layout incorporates modular partition walls, translucent fabric dividers, and reusable display fixtures, complemented by QR codes and interactive digital media to minimize single-use printed materials and physical waste.
Through this exhibition, the National Museum of History affirms that the transformative power of art transcends gender. We invite audiences to engage in an ongoing dialogue with these artists, honoring a shared cultural vision rooted in diversity, equity, and inclusion.
