(upcoming) Egyptian Mummies: Journey into Immortality
Exhibition Introduction

The National Museum of History and Mediasphere are proud to present the international special exhibition of the year: Egyptian Mummies: Journey into Immortality. Featuring authentic mummies and exquisite funerary artifacts—from painted coffins and amulets to stelae inscribed with prayers—this exhibition decodes the wisdom and beliefs behind the ancient Egyptians' pursuit of eternal life.

To the ancient Egyptians, death was not the end, but a transition—a passage for the transformation of life. Preserving the physical body was essential for the soul's return; these rituals were not a celebration of death, but a preservation of life for the next world. The ancient Egyptians prepared the deceased for the afterlife by perfectly intertwining technical knowledge with mythological imagination.

Following the ancient concept of the "Afterlife," the exhibition explores their sophisticated funerary customs, from the practice of mummification to the "Weighing of the Heart" before Osiris, the god of the underworld. The artifacts are on loan from a major European center for Egyptian antiquities—the National Archaeological Museum of Florence (Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Firenze). The collection includes rare treasures gathered in the 19th century by the Franco-Tuscan Expedition, led by Jean-François Champollion, the scholar who deciphered hieroglyphs. Beyond the authentic mummies, more than a hundred objects imbued with protective magic are on display: canopic jars for preserving internal organs, funerary deities representing the Four Sons of Horus, funerary nets used to cover the body, and heart scarabs intended to guide the deceased through judgment. These artifacts are not only masterpieces of craftsmanship but also real traces of a civilization’s struggle against time in the quest for eternity, unveiling the timeless legend of immortality.
