A Wormhole to Blooming Fantasies: Hung Yi’s Sculptures
Exhibition Introduction

“Blooming illusions” evoke the vibrant unfolding of imagination, while “wormholes” suggest a passage that traverses the boundaries between past and present. Through his sculpture installations in the outdoor spaces of the National Museum of History, Hung Yi constructs a “garden theatre” that spans across time and space. Here, aliens and animals join in a fantastical visual feast, where rounded forms and energetic colors playfully weave between historic architecture and the bustling contemporary cityscape.
Extraterrestrial beings, often shaped by humanity’s fantasies and anxieties toward the vast unknown of the universe, are reimagined by Hung Yi through humorous heart-shaped hand gestures. Their metallic surfaces coolly mirror the greenery, the sky, and—most directly—the viewers who stand face to face with them. They feel distant yet intimate, austere yet amusing, like strange companions in a carnival or reflective figures contemplating solitude in the boundless cosmos.
Animals, on the other hand, have remained spiritually intertwined with humans across the long river of history, shaped by the shared vitality of natural evolution. In their simplified, stylized forms, Hung Yi weaves together motifs from folklore, mythology, and contemporary culture, imbuing each creature with rich symbols of goodwill and blessing. Scattered amid trees, pavilions, rocks, and ponds, these animals appear as though they are hosting a grand celebration where time and space collide within a garden landscape.
“A Wormhole to Blooming Fantasies” is not only a visual carnival but also a modern allegory of coexistence and empathetic understanding. Art transcends species and language; it moves freely across time, space, and imagination. This “interstellar animal party” invites viewers to enter the scene—whether encountering beings of cosmic fantasy or crossing paths with symbols of natural life—and to reflect upon a shared core question: How do we find connection amid difference, and how might play become a pathway to renewed understanding?
The exhibition brings together a selection of Hung Yi’s brightly colored and delightfully shaped sculptures, breaking away from traditional indoor display formats through a cross-institutional outdoor installation. Works are placed throughout the National Museum of History, the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute – Taipei Branch, and the National Taiwan Arts Education Center, forming an extended “sculpture corridor” across the Nan-Hai campus. Visitors may roam freely, experiencing the spatial dynamism of the sculptures in close proximity.
