2024 marks the 10th anniversary of the passing of Han Pao-Teh. To commemorate this outstanding cultural figure, the Ministry of Culture is promoting a series of exhibitions. The National Museum of History, through this calligraphy exhibition, aims to present a complete view of his artistic creations, thereby expanding the impact and reach of the exhibition.
Architecture is a spatial art form that utilizes inanimate materials such as stone and wood. In contrast, calligraphy expresses vivid emotions and wisdom through written words on paper. Each stroke in Han Pao-teh’s calligraphy mirrors an architectural line, and every detail in his work reflects the creator’s profound learning and unique perspective. The integration of calligraphic lines and architectural structures reveals the intersection of different art forms, conveying a deep cultural resonance.
Calligraphy is an art that embodies the richness of history and the essence of culture. Calligraphic expressions serve as a means of cultural continuity and intellectual communication. As such, calligraphic works transcend both spatial and temporal limitations, allowing viewers to connect with the feelings and aspirations of both past and contemporary literati. Each piece of calligraphy is like a silent poem, expressing the beauty of calligraphy and the truths of life when fully appreciated. In essence, a calligraphic work represents a genuine glimpse into the calligrapher’s inner world.
Han’s mastery of ink, understanding of character forms, and structural arrangements highlight his relentless pursuit of and insights into the art of calligraphy. His work reveals a deep engagement with traditional calligraphy, while also demonstrating bold modern experiments. With a distinctive style and profound knowledge, his work transcends the boundaries of space and time, infusing contemporary freshness into this ancient art form.
It is important to note that calligraphy represents just one of Han’s many accomplishments. This exhibition focuses on part of his study and practice of calligraphy, showcasing his artistic expression of characters and also emphasizing his calligraphy as the continuation of his spatial perception and discourse of beauty. Through this exhibition, the audience is encouraged to appreciate both the power of brushwork in calligraphy and the aesthetic qualities of architectural design, discovering their own inspiration and revelation in the harmonious blend of these art forms.
This exhibition is based on Han Pao-Teh's calligraphy philosophy, emphasizing the integration of calligraphy with the art of daily life. A selection of 102 calligraphy works by Han Pao-Teh, curated by his family, will be displayed. The works are divided into four sections based on their creation period and stylistic characteristics: " Learning from the Past" (循古), " Lyricism in Calligraphy" (抒情), " Composition and Arrangement" (構成), and "Innovation and Freshness" (新象). From research and copying to the development of his own style, Han Pao-Teh's journey in calligraphy represents a return to tradition. This exhibition hopes to offer the public a deeper understanding of his artistic creations in the field of calligraphy.
