In mid-2018, the National Museum of History began a project, set for completion in early 2024, to restore and repurpose its 100-year-old building. As the first large-scale renovation and renewal of the permanent exhibition since the Museum’s establishment in 1955, it will unveil a new look and usher in a new era for the NMH.
The new permanent exhibition features a selection of 110 artifacts, presenting the social and cultural changes that the National Museum of History has experienced alongside Taiwanese society over the past 70 years. Thus, the Museum would successfully fulfill its task of “enabling understanding of the modern and recent history of Taiwan’s social and cultural development.”
Through the conceptual themes of “Heritage,” “Convergence” and “Know the Past to See the Future,” this exhibition presents the history of life in the midst of movement. It tells the story of the museum’s collection—a story of living together on this land as we pass on traditions and embrace change, a story that includes great artists and all of us. It invites everyone to take part in writing the future together. It also expresses the hope that the “Eternal Spring of Taiwan” will continue to flourish, as we all greet a new era through the power of unity.
