This exhibition marks Tsao Shu-mei’s first solo presentation. Characterized by a raw yet powerful and deeply expressive brushwork, her practice explores the expansive possibilities of calligraphy and art through the inversion, distortion, and transformation of written forms. By playing with the relationship between legibility and abstraction, Tsao reimagines the written character as both a vessel of language and an autonomous visual form.
Featuring approximately sixty works, the exhibition encompasses traditional calligraphy alongside works that experiment with newly conceived forms of writing and abstract expression. Through calligraphy, Tsao gives form to her inner states, revealing a mode of expression that is at once unpretentious and free. Her works bring tradition and innovation into dialogue, opening up an expansive creative horizon in which the possibilities of calligraphic expression seem boundless.
