Rainer Honeck and Albena Danailova, both concertmasters of the Vienna Philharmonic, performed together with NTSO in the 2019 concert titled “Meeting of Masters”. This concert is titled “Meeting of Masters II” as a nod to the impressive performance in 2019.
Honeck has worked closely with NTSO before: he was the resident artist of NTSO during the 2017/18 season and performed with the orchestra as a soloist and conductor. They presented works by Haydn, Mozart, and Schubert - composers who are closely linked to Vienna. Beethoven is another significant composer that comes to mind when we mention “the Capitol of Music – Vienna”. The two compositions by Beethoven featured in this concert were completed after the tumultuous French Revolution: his Symphony No. 2 in D Major was written in 1802 and the opera Fidelio was written between 1803 and 1814. The opera was originally titled Leonore and later renamed Fidelio after multiple revisions. Beethoven was meticulous when creating Fidelio - the overture alone had four versions. Leonore and Fidelio are both names of the heroine in the opera. Leonore is her actual name and Fidelio is the alias she used to sneak into prison to save her husband. Fidelio exalts how people are willing to pay the price for their ideals and risk all for love. The opera was performed by Vienna Philharmonic and conducted by Karl Böhm on the reopening night of the Vienna State Opera in 1955 after its renovation. It is also very meaningful that Honeck chose to open this concert with Leonore Overture No. 3.
Many have felt the influence of Beethoven’s artistic skills and spirit, including Russian composer Glazunov. When Russia commemorated Beethoven’s 100th birthday in 1927, Glazunov was the lecturer and conductor. Glazunov’s Violin Concerto in A minor show strong German-Austrian roots and dazzling skills and techniques which will be interpreted by the extraordinary concertmaster Danailova.
