Egret in the Autumn

“Green, green the reed. Dew and frost gleam. Where’s she I need. Beyond the stream.”

Inspired by an ancient Chinese poem from “The Book of Songs”. I transformed the figure in the poem into a graceful white egret, with the melody of the Taiwanese folk song “White Egret” into the composition after reshaping pitches and changing the rhythm.

The opening strings depict a misty autumn riverside, while the woodwinds, with fragmented melodies, evoke the images of the white egret. In the middle section, the clarinet first introduces the reconstructed melody from Taiwanese folk song, and then follow by other woodwinds. Then the melodies from each section seamlessly connect, creating a sense of chasing, symbolizing the journey of overcoming challenges, but it eventually comes to an end. However, life is a journey of self-discovery, navigating through both easy and challenging times.
