The programs of a French-themed concert may not be limited to pieces written by French composers, it can also include music with French influences. The 19th-century Russian upper society was so deeply impacted by French culture that not only did every member of the Russian aristocracy mastered French, but some even spoke it more fluently than Russian. If you look at Scriabin’s written instructions on the musical scores, he wrote them more and more frequently in French, showing that he was inclined to think about his artistic expressions in this language.
Scriabin is often connected with mysticism and synesthesia and his music is difficult to comprehend. The word “ecstasy” is used to describe a person’s state of delirium at a particular moment, it can be triggered by religious experiences, strong emotions, or pain. Therefore, we can expect “Poème de l'Extase” to have moments of strong emotions and vivid colors, offering the audience an exciting musical experience.
The delicate and colorful “Poème de l'Extase” is a suitable match for Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major. This concerto will be played by soloist Frances Hwei-Cheh Liu, who graduated with the First Prize from the graduate program of the Conservatoire Supérieur de Paris. And the background scale of Scriabin’s works is similar to those found in Richard Strauss’ compositions. The Eine Alpensinfonie, which is Strauss’ largest orchestral piece, captures the traveler’s experience during a mountain-climbing trip. He starts before the sun is up and ends the trip after the sun sets. The audience in the concert hall can fully experience the changes in weather, terrain, and light throughout the entire day as the composer has transformed the journey into sound and music. The magnificent landscape and imposing nature inspire the listener to become one with nature. Climbing three mountains in one concert is a challenge for NTSO, but a grand musical feast for the audience.
