這場音樂會的熱鬧或許在林姆斯基－高沙可夫的《天方夜譚》交響組曲，門道或許在巴伯的《醜聞學校》序曲和貝爾格的小提琴協奏曲。

林姆斯基－高沙可夫的《天方夜譚》交響組曲寫於1888年。作曲家是「五人組」的成員，抱持發揚俄羅斯特色的理念；身為俄羅斯海軍的親身體驗，以及西歐的交響詩、標題音樂的風潮，都反映在《天方夜譚》交響組曲中，成就了這部旋律悅耳、色彩繽紛、明白淺顯的作品，始終受到演奏家與聽眾的喜愛。

巴伯的《醜聞學校》序曲，同樣也是平易近人，讓人一聽成主顧的樂曲。巴伯從十八世紀英國劇作家謝里丹的同名喜劇擷取靈感，在1931年完成此曲。此時巴伯年僅21歲，還在寇蒂斯音樂學院唸書。活力洋溢、樂思敏捷，不見年輕作曲家的生澀，讓巴伯聲名鵲起，也奠定了他作曲家的地位。

貝爾格的小提琴協奏曲也是1930年代的作品，但是趣味大不相同。貝爾格是因為艾爾瑪．馬勒與建築家葛羅彼烏斯生的女兒死於小兒麻痺症，有感而發，放下未完成的歌劇《露露》，寫成此曲，「獻給一位天使」。這首小提琴協奏曲也成為貝爾格最後完成、最常被演奏的傑作。（撰文／吳家恆）
 

The lively “Scheherazade” Symphonic Suite by Rimsky-Korsakov is sure to delight the general public, while Barber’s “The School of Scandal” Overture and Berg’s Violin Concerto will appeal to music aficionados.

Rimsky-Korsakov is a member of The Mighty Five that is dedicated to promoting Russian features. Written in 1888, his Symphonic Suite “Scheherazade” reflects the composer’s personal experience in the Russian navy as well as the trends of symphonic poetry and programme music from Western Europe. The composition is melodic, colorful, down-to-earth, and very popular among musicians and audiences alike.

Barber's Overture to “The School of Scandal” is equally approachable and very well-liked. Inspired by the comedy of the same name by the 18th-century Irish playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan, Barber completed this piece in 1931 – when he was only 21 years old and still studying at The Curtis Institute of Music. Energetic and nimble, the composition does not feel like the immature work of a young composer and thus made Barber famous and established him as a composer.

Berg's Violin Concerto is also from the 1930s but with very different features. Berg put aside his opera Lulu and finished this concerto, which he dedicated “To the memory of an angel”, after learning that the daughter of Alma Mahler and architect Walter Gropius had passed away from polio. This violin concerto also became Berg’s last and most frequently performed masterpiece.
