法國的曲目也是國臺交這個樂季的重點之一，而且集中在白遼士與拉威爾這兩位以精湛多彩的管弦樂法著稱的作曲家身上。

這場音樂會或許給人一點錯覺，以為整場都是白遼士的作品。《幻想》交響曲與《羅馬狂歡節》是白遼士的招牌傑作，《幻想》還讓帕格尼尼頗為激賞，委託他創作中提琴協奏曲，最後白遼士取材英國詩人拜倫，寫了《哈洛德在義大利》。

為中提琴創作的重要作曲家並不多，因此，看到這場音樂會邀請中提琴家黃心芸，就會想到白遼士的作品。
但是，黃心芸在這場音樂會演出的是陳可嘉的中提琴協奏曲《心之所欲》(The Desires)。陳可嘉目前任教於美國寇蒂斯音樂院，在國際樂壇相當活躍。《心之所欲》曾由費城管絃樂團演出過。這首協奏曲以「慾望」為標題，分為三個樂章，由於中提琴幽暗的音色，樂曲時而狂亂，時而低迴，時而優美，但都有著內斂的特質，若干旋律素材讓人想起臺灣傳統歌謠，也反映了陳可嘉是以臺灣人的出身來思考「慾望」這個普世主題。

白遼士的《幻想》交響曲，也是在處理「慾望」：求愛不得，輾轉反側，痛苦不堪，於是有了尋短見的念頭。《羅馬狂歡節》序曲與歌劇《班文努多．柴利尼》有關，這齣歌劇以文藝復興時期佛羅倫斯的著名金匠、雕塑家柴利尼為主角，也是一個慾望橫流、高潮迭起的故事，以管弦樂序曲來表現，精彩淋漓不減。（撰文／吳家恆）

As French compositions are also one of the highlights of this season, NTSO will focus on Berlioz and Ravel, two composers known for their exquisite and vibrant orchestral works.

At first, you might mistake this as a concert of Berlioz’s works, since “Le Carnaval Romain” and “Symphonie fantastique” are both signature masterpieces of this composer. Violinist Paganini was so impressed by “Symphonie fantastique”, he commissioned Berlioz to write a viola concerto. Eventually, Berlioz found inspiration in British poet Byron’s works and wrote Harold en Italie.

Since there aren't many viola pieces written by well-known composers, you’d probably think of Berlioz's compositions when you see the name of viola player Hsin-Yun Huang on the concert program. However, in this concert, Huang will be performing The Desires by Ke-Chia Chen. Ke-Chia Chen is very active in the global music scene and is a current instructor at The Curtis Institute of Music in the US. The Desires, which comprises three movements, has been performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra before. Because of the viola’s dark tone, the music is sometimes frantic, sometimes low and winding, and sometimes beautiful; but the presentation is always subdued and subtle. Some melodies and themes remind people of traditional Taiwanese songs, which also indicates that Chen is contemplating the universal theme of “desire” from a Taiwanese perspective.

The “Symphonie fantastique” by Berlioz similarly deals with desire: the main character is in misery, unable to sleep, and thinks about suicide since he is unable to gain affection from the one he loves. “Le Carnaval Romain” is an overture from the opera Benvenuto Cellini, which features the famous goldsmith and sculptor Cellini of Renaissance Florence as the protagonist. The dramatic love story filled with desire is fully expressed in this orchestral prelude.
