巴赫的《B小調彌撒》是基督教聖樂屬於「聖母峰等級」的高峰──人人都知道這部作品，但是有機會在音樂廳親炙欣賞的人並不多。巴赫以一位信奉新教的作曲家，把舊教習用的拉丁經文寫成彌撒曲，此舉就已讓人側目。而巴赫把《垂憐經》、《榮耀頌》、《信經》、《聖哉經》、《降福經》與《羔羊經》六段經文寫成將近三十首樂曲，完整演出需時兩小時，足以撐起整場音樂會，這等手筆在宗教音樂中也不常見。而巴赫安排了獨唱曲、重唱、合唱（四部到六部）、雙合唱團各種組合來處理不同段落的經文，在宏偉中見細膩，一般的合唱團與樂團也不敢輕易嘗試。

「沒有三兩三，不敢上梁山」。《B小調彌撒》也是樂團與合唱團的「梁山」之一，考驗合唱團的綜合能力：對拉丁文、歐洲文化涵養的掌握能力，聲音的質地與默契，在面對《B小調彌撒》是無所遁形的。

這對樂團也是考驗，相對清爽的織度意味著各個樂器有更多獨奏、重奏的機會，拿捏油膩與單調之間那條很微妙的界線，尤其又是在音響效果傑出的衛武營國家藝術文化中心音樂廳演出。天、地、人三個因素的交會，造就了這場令人期待又難得一聞的音樂會。（撰文／吳家恆）

Bach’s Mass in B minor is considered the holy grail in Christian sacred music - everyone knows about this piece yet very few have the opportunity to enjoy it in a concert hall. The fact that Bach, a composer of Lutheran faith, wrote a Mass already raised a few eyebrows. The composer created nearly 30 pieces of music for the Ordinary of the Mass (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei), and to present the different parts, he employed different combinations: solos, ensembles, choruses (four to six voices), and double choirs. The result is an intricate and majestic composition that requires two hours to fully perform, a scale which is uncommon even for religious music. Bach’s Mass in B minor alone is enough for one concert, yet choirs and orchestras are often hesitant to perform this piece.

There is this old saying, “don’t go up the mountain if you are not fully prepared” and Mass in B Minor is indeed a demanding mountain for the orchestra and choir to conquer as musicians cannot hide anything when performing the Mass. The composition tests multiple skills of the choir: they need to master Latin and have background knowledge on European culture, and the voice quality should fit harmoniously during the presentation.

It is a trial for the orchestra as well. The simple and clean composition means more solo or ensemble parts for different instruments. Since the concert is held in the Concert Hall of National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts , which has outstanding acoustics, the musicians must master the delicate balance between being excessive and boring. The perfect timing of the heaven, earth, and people has brought forth this exciting concert, don’t miss this golden opportunity!
