Vienna Philharmonic concertmaster Honeck serves both as a soloist and conductor in this presentation of Mozart’s works.

When young Mozart went to London to perform, he was already well-known throughout Europe. The prodigy started showcasing his talents at a very young age – he completed his Symphony No. 1 when he was only eight years old! Traits of many predecessors, such as “London” Bach (J. C. Bach), can be found in this first symphony; yet even when compared to Mozart's final symphony, this piece from his childhood can still hold its own, as if little Mozart was born with great mastery and skill in music composition. However, his childhood works are rarely performed.

Mozart composed five concertos for the violin, which is not surprising given that his father was a well-known violinist. Yet surprisingly, four of them were written at the age of nineteen and he wrote no more violin concertos after that. This concert presents Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5, which is considered the most outstanding one in terms of technique and length, and can best show the skills of the soloist. The rondo, composed in the Turkish style, is the signature feature of this concerto.

Do not be misled by the word “serenade” in the title of “Haffner”. The performance of this work, which consists of eight musical movements, lasts almost an hour, making it longer than the symphonies of the time. However, the composition still exhibits the exquisite qualities of chamber music. The violin is highlighted in several movements, thus it also carries the feeling of a violin concerto.

Such a simple and elegant program is definitely not possible for musicians without merit and skill.
