今年是拉赫曼尼諾夫的150歲冥誕，拉赫曼尼諾夫的人生因俄羅斯的革命與戰亂畫分成兩半。他在俄羅斯出生、成長、受教育、發展音樂生涯；然而，他在1917年放棄在俄羅斯的一切積累，輾轉到了美國，在此終老。歷經生活的劇變、文化的斷裂、財務的不穩定，到了美國的拉赫曼尼諾夫，再起爐灶，重心放在演奏事業，而非創作。這是為什麼拉赫曼尼諾夫以45歲壯年到了美國，還有26年的壽命，可是作品並不多，以至於今天世人還是把他當作「俄羅斯作曲家」。
《交響舞曲》寫於1940年，地點是美國紐約的長島，但是曲中充滿了與過往作品的關聯。在抖擻的律動中，有著交響曲的影子，〈末日經〉在此也沒有缺席，器樂喚起東正教聖歌旋律的印象，這是回望，也是鄉愁。
白遼士的《羅馬狂歡節》序曲的創作年代比《交響舞曲》早了約一百年，但是兩首作品的明亮澎湃相互呼應，可謂絕配。再佐以風格輕盈醇厚的海頓第二號大提琴協奏曲，由國臺交大提琴副首席黃佳文擔任獨奏，並由洪毅全指揮整場音樂會，在古今、輕重之間尋求均衡。（撰文／吳家恆）
The life of Rachmaninoff, who celebrates his 150th birthday this year, was divided by the Russian revolution and war. Born and raised in Russia, Rachmaninoff started his music career in his home country; nevertheless, the composer gave it all up in 1917 and lived out the rest of his life in the US. Rachmaninoff focused on performing instead of composing music after he relocated to the US, having endured drastic life changes, cultural shocks, and unstable financial conditions. This is why Rachmaninoff is still considered a Russian composer even though he moved to the US when he was 45 years old and did not produce many compositions during the remaining 26 years of his life.
The piece “Symphonic Dances” was completed in 1940 in Long Island, New York; yet it is filled with connections with Rachmaninoff’s past. There are traces of symphony music in the spirited rhythm and the instruments in Dies Irae evoke the Eastern Orthodox chants, all of which express the composer’s yearning for the past and his homeland.
Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture was completed about a century earlier than Symphonic Dances, but both pieces are strong and bright and complement each other perfectly. This concert also features NTSO’s cello Deputy Concertmaster Chia-Wen Huang as the soloist in the light and mellow Cello Concerto No. 2 in D Major by Haydn. Conducted by Darrell Ang, the concert presents a balance between the past and present, lightness and weight.
