Attractive and popular among music aficionados, Dvořák’s works display an idyllic style with rugged and mesmerizing Slavic features. Elegant and tasteful melodies are delivered through the composer’s meticulous composition skills. This concert, conducted by the resident artist of NTSO Rainer Honeck, presents various works by Dvořák, including the popular Symphony No. 9 “From the New World” which was completed in 1893 and premiered at the Carnegie Hall in New York, and his Serenade for Wind Instruments in D minor. Written in 1878, this piece is composed with a woodwind quintet as the foundation yet leaves out the flute. The number of instruments is doubled and there is one additional French horn. Dvořák later added a cello and a double bass, giving the composition a darker and more rugged tone.

As a composer, Dvořák was a late bloomer – he was well into his thirties when he wrote his serenade. This marked a new phase in his life as well as his career. His works, including this serenade, swiftly expanded Dvořák’s popularity and made him a household name. However, he also experienced the loss of family members during this period. And Slavic music is the best medium to express the joy and sorrows of life.

Dvořák completed his Symphony No. 9 in his fifties when he was already well-known around the world. It is easy to see why this symphony is so popular: the melody is appealing and the material is structured delicately. The movements are linked with one another to express powerful emotions while giving each instrument a chance to perform. The symphony challenges the musicians as well as the conductor to bring a great presentation to the audience.
