NTSO's performance of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 9 was a highlight of the previous season. In this concert, we present one of Bruckner's most famous works: Symphony No. 7 in E Major. Looking back, NTSO has explored many works by Bruckner, including his symphonies No. 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8.
Since he was unfortunately caught between the trends that supported and disliked Wagner in the European music scene at the time, Bruckner found it difficult to publish his symphonies. His seventh symphony was the one that ultimately brought him accolades and recognition. Bruckner dedicated the title to Ludwig II of Bavaria (who was a major fan of Wagner) and premiered it in Leipzig, with Nikisch Artúr as the conductor. After conducting this piece, the conductor vowed to make Bruckner known to the world. However, Bruckner did not want to present the composition in Vienna too soon, as he was afraid that music critic Eduard Hanslick, who had always been harsh on him, would heavily criticize the piece and ruin it. So Bruckner performed his Symphony No. 7 first in Munich where it accumulated much praise, therefore even if Hanslick later attacked the symphony, the damage would be limited. With this clever maneuver, Symphony No. 7 was widely acclaimed and took Bruckner's composition career to the next level.
Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed in this concert by Belgrade-born soloist Anika Vavic. Vavic, who has made significant contributions to the modern music scene, studied in Vienna at the age of 16 and has since settled in the musical capital. She has made numerous appearances in the Golden Hall and collaborated with conductors such as Paavo Järvi and Jukka-Pekka Saraste.
This piano concerto was a birthday gift from Shostakovich to his 19-year-old son. While it may not be as impressive as his other works, the Allegro movement is very vivacious, and the Andante movement is deeply affectionate. This is a piece that can easily resonate with the audience.
