Oftentimes the views on life and the life experiences of great artists can only be understood through their works. Symphony No. 9 in D minor was Bruckner’s final symphony. He began to work on this composition in 1887 and spent nearly 10 years to complete the first three movements. He died in 1896 before he could finish the last part.

Bruckner dedicated this piece to God, yet the heavens decided to leave this symphony unfinished. It is difficult to predict the will of God, but maybe Bruckner would disagree. Bruckner was born in an era during which the authority of the church was further challenged. However, like Bach and his generation of musicians, Bruckner was trained by church organ masters and wrote religious music for Mass. The solemn and solid sound of organs also affected his instrumental creations. On the other hand, as a German musician active during the second half of the 19th century, Bruckner was also influenced by Wagner. And these elements can be found in all of his symphonies, including No. 9.

Bruckner’s Symphony No. 9 in D minor is stately and well-rounded, yet if it is the only piece performed in a concert, it would leave the audience unsatisfied. So for this concert, NTSO also presents Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme to complete it. Japanese cellist Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi, who has visited Taiwan many times, will be the soloist.

Rococo refers to the style that appeared after the Baroque. It is the transition between the elaborate and pompous to a more balanced and reserved style. Following this style, Tchaikovsky used a small orchestra to set off the cello solo. The main theme is elegant with lots of variations for the cellist to display their skills and shine.
