Young conductor Yi-Chen Lin is currently very active among the new generation in the European music circle. Born in Taiwan, she moved with her family to Vienna when she was very young. Lin later studied violin, piano, and conducting, and was instructed by Zubin Mehta, Bernard Haitink, and David Zinman. Lin made her conducting debut at Vienna’s Golden Hall in 2009. Since then, she has been invited to conduct numerous concerts and operas, including contemporary new works such as Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Greek at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, and classic compositions - Lin was invited by the Bregenzer Festspiele to conduct Puccini’s Madame Butterfly.
Lin’s clean and decisive style allows her to handle difficult operas and take the interpretations to the next level. Her artistry is recognized by many production producers and Lin is constantly sought after by European music festivals and opera houses.
The coldness of the north and the warmth of the south are both represented in this concert. Sibelius’ “Finlandia” is the perfect opportunity for conductor Yi-Chen Lin to fully demonstrate her sharp and clear form. Violinist Robert Chen, who has been the concertmaster of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra since 1999, will take the stage as the soloist in the same composer’s Violin Concerto in D minor. An active soloist in the recent music scene, Chen unleashes his outstanding skills and unbridled energy in this intense interaction with NTSO.
Ravel’s Suite “Ma Mère l'oye” was a piano piece that was later adapted into an orchestral composition by the composer. This version showcases the composer’s perspective of color and exquisite instrument arranging skills beautifully. His “Rapsodie Espagnole” pays homage to the music that has always flowed in Ravel’s veins – Ravel’s mother was of the Basque people who resided on the French-Spanish border, so Spanish music is to Ravel like a mother tongue.
Come and experience how the conductor and NTSO present the collision of fire and ice.
