Curatorial Statement
The concept of “Right Where It Belongs” is inspired by the idea of “Technium” proposed by Kevin Kelly, a cutting-edge concept that tries to integrate technology and intelligence, and cold machinery and warm Earth. “Technium” is a declarative hypothesis/theory that attempts to integrate artificial and natural worlds from a technical perspective, and regards technology as an extension of the human mind—like a giant organism—that participates and inspires a series of evolutionary processes, which turn around to wrap mankind within. The disturbance of this “Technium” within society is multifaceted, creating displacements in both human experiential perception and the politicality of technological media. These new ways of life faced by humanity caused by rapid technical and cultural iterations are the issues highly concerned by contemporary artists, and how artists understand the core concept of the basic connection between technology and the world around us is the very nature of “Technium.” This exhibition invites a total of 12 domestic and overseas teams of artists to engage in reflexive thinking and creative practices developed against such backdrop, exploring a wide range of seemingly divided, but actually related topics, such as AI, biotech, post ecosystem, digital democracy, and post-Internet society. In addition to further understanding the limits and potentials of technology, on the other hand, we can also rediscover the origins and future of “Anthropogenesis” through the spectrum of consciousness unfolded from the Traditional Chinese topic of “soul (靈魂)”—referring not just to spiritual beliefs, but also different effects of consciousness, including the mind, recognition, and intuition. Here, what this exhibition desires to display and question is: where does the soul belong to within this freely development world of digital technology?
