How does a translator navigate issues like accuracy, subtext, figurative language, poetic and sound devices, ambiguity, allusions, and conciseness when translating Chinese-language poetry into English? Yilin Wang will guide participants through an in-depth discussion of how to navigate the unique challenges of translating classical and modern Sinophone poetry into English by close reading multiple published translations of one poem, to dissect the creative choices made by different translators. She will share a step-by-step illustration of her own process and discuss the techniques she employed when translating poetry for her book The Lantern and the Night Moths. Participants should bring a poem written in Classical Chinese, Mandarin, or other Sinitic languages that they wish to translate or that they have translated; there will be time for the attendees to try translating poetry and to share their translations for encouragement and feedback.
※ This workshop includes hands-on text translation exercises. Participants are recommended to have basic communication and writing skills in both Mandarin and English.
