言嶼交響：2026臺灣文學英譯工作坊

一、宗旨：

2021-2025年，國立臺灣文學館與英國文學翻譯中心（British Centre for Literary Translation, BCLT）合作辦理臺灣文學翻譯工作坊，培育諸多臺灣文學譯者。2026年，臺文館再次攜手BCLT推出「言嶼交響：2026臺灣文學英譯工作坊」，為有志投入臺灣文學英譯的譯者量身打造深度且專業的培訓課程，內容包括翻譯實作、專題講座、文化走讀及文史參訪等。

工作坊特別邀請國際知名譯者Jeremy Tiang及資深編輯Dennis Zhou擔任導師，並邀集臺灣作家，以及來自英國、日本、韓國、芬蘭等國的資深譯者、學者、出版界代表共同參與。期透過多元交流與實作，強化學員對臺灣文學翻譯的專業能力，深化對臺灣文學、文化與語言的理解，拓展國際譯者網絡，並探索文學翻譯領域的職涯發展與未來可能性，促進跨文化交流與專業對話。

四、時間與地點

（一）報名期間

即日起至2026年6月21日（星期日）臺灣時間（UTC+8）23:59截止（逾期不受理）。

（二）工作坊辦理時間與地點

2026年11月9日（星期一）至11月14日（星期六），於國立臺灣文學館辦理，共6天。

五、徵選名額與資格

預計錄取20名學員。凡年滿18歲，有志從事臺灣文學英譯之國內外譯者、社會人士，以及大專校院與研究所在學學生皆可報名。報名者須依主辦單位提供之文本完成試譯內容，並檢附英譯參考作品。

六、參加費用

（一）本工作坊期間費用─由主辦單位安排及支應以下相關項目：

1. 所有課程費用。
2.  保險、住宿（5晚）及午餐。

（二）主辦單位另將支應部分交通費用，憑購票證明文件實報實銷：

1. 具學生身分者（國內、外），檢附在學證明：支應在臺往返臺南之臺鐵交通費，最高得依臺鐵自強號票價報支。欲搭乘高鐵者，可自行補差價。

2.現居國外者：每人得申請部分國際機票支應，支應金額上限說明如下 ：

(1)亞洲國家：最高新臺幣15,000元。

(2)亞洲以外國家：最高新臺幣30,000元。

3.同時符合上述資格者，可合併申請。

七、課程內容

工作坊課程核心內容包括：

（一）臺灣作家分享創作理念，由工作坊導師親自帶領文本英譯實作課程。

（二）臺灣文學翻譯與出版專題講座：聚焦翻譯實務、出版市場趨勢及譯者職涯規劃。

（三）臺南城市導覽、文學與文化走讀，以及臺文館常設展與特展參訪。

（四）鄰近城市文史參訪、導覽及文化體驗。

 八、導師介紹

Jeremy Tiang
旅居紐約的新加坡籍譯者與小說家。翻譯作品超過30部，包括駱以軍、黃崇凱、張悅然、雙雪濤、英培安等華文作家作品。同時從事戲劇創作與翻譯，包括雙語劇《Salesman之死》獲得2024年度Obie獎，其小說《緊急狀態》(State of Emergency)榮獲新加坡文學獎。與 Kavita Bhanot博士共同編輯《暴力現象：翻譯論文21篇》(Violent Phenomena: 21 Essays on Translation)。2021年至2025年擔任臺文館與英國文學翻譯中心（BCLT）合辦的「臺灣文學翻譯工作坊」導師。

Dennis Zhou

居住於紐約的作家和編輯，現任《巴黎評論》（The Paris Review）資深編輯，曾任《紐約客》（The New Yorker）編輯。合作過的作家包括韓江、川上弘美、奇戈齊·歐比奧馬（Chigozie Obioma）、關多琳·萊利（Gwendoline Riley）、瓊·西爾伯（Joan Silber）、雙雪濤、大衛·索洛伊（David Szalay）、閻連科與余華等。曾獲2025年羅伯特·B·西爾弗斯寫作計畫補助（Robert B. Silvers Work-in-Progress Grant），並於2021年獲得傅爾布萊特獎學金（Fulbright）赴臺研究。其撰寫關於文學、電影與視覺藝術的文章，刊載於《紐約客》、《紐約書評》（The New York Review of Books）與《紐約時報雜誌》（The New York Times Magazine）等刊物。

九、報名方式

第一步

請至下方下載區表單，並以英文完整填寫（含試譯內容）。

第二步

完成個人基本資料填寫後，上傳以下檔案：

• 申請表格：檔名「申請表格_申請人姓名」（請轉存為PDF格式上傳）
• 翻譯作品：除試譯內容外，如有相關翻譯作品，請上傳檔名「作家_作品名稱_申請人姓名」
• 在學證明：檔名「在學證明_申請人姓名」

十、報名須知

（一）各項報名文件須以英文撰寫。

（二）請使用有效電子郵件，所有通知將透過Email寄發。

（三）徵選結果預計於2026年8月31日（星期一）前以電子郵件通知。

十一、注意事項

（一）申請者應於申請前，確認可自行申請取得入境臺灣的簽證。若入選，主辦單位將提供錄取通知為憑。

（二）錄取者須全程參與工作坊，並配合主辦單位安排之課程與活動，活動結束後需協助填寫意見回饋單。

（三）國內學員需繳交保證金新臺幣3,000元，全程參與後全額退還；未能全程參與者，恕不退還。國外學員採切結方式，免繳保證金；如未能全程參加，除特殊原因經主辦單位同意外，機票費用將不予支應。符合交通費支應資格者，支應金額依實際核銷標準辦理。

（四）本工作坊為非營利性質，主辦單位提供學員住宿（旅館或特色民宿，以雙床房型為主，採兩人一室，並依生理性別安排同室住宿 ）。

（五）申請表格內容須為本人撰寫，且保證無違法或侵害他人權益之情事，不得使用AI生成工具協助撰寫、翻譯或重製內容。如經查資料填寫不實或有違反規定情形，主辦單位得取消其入選資格。

（六）主辦單位得視報名狀況，調整錄取者人數。

（七）主辦單位將於工作坊期間進行拍照、錄影紀錄，以作後續活動宣傳使用，如不同意影像使用者請事先告知。

（八）本簡章若有未盡事宜，主辦單位保留解釋及修訂之權利。如因天候或其他不可抗力因素，經政府公告停班或停課，則活動順延或調整，將另行通知。

A Symphony of Island and Literature:
2026 Workshop for Translating Taiwan Literature

Call for Applications

I. Mission: An International Workshop for Chinese-to-English Translators

From 2021 to 2025, the National Museum of Taiwan Literature (NMTL) collaborated with the British Centre for Literary Translation (BCLT) to deliver a series of Taiwan literature translation workshops with the view to nurture a new generation of literary translators. In 2026, the NMTL is partnering once again with BCLT to present  A Symphony of Island and Literature: 2026 Workshop for Translating Taiwan Literature. This intensive and immersive training program is tailored for translators of Taiwan literature into English, consisting of practical translation exercises, panel discussions, and visits to places of literary and cultural heritage.

The workshop will feature internationally acclaimed translator Jeremy Tiang and senior editor Dennis Zhou as mentors, joined by Taiwanese authors, and literary translators, agents, and publishers from Finland, Japan, Korea, the United Kingdom, and other countries. Through a rich program, the workshop aims to strengthen participants' skills in translating Taiwan literature, deepen their engagement with Taiwan’s literature, culture and languages, broaden their networks, explore professional development opportunities in literary translation, and foster cross-cultural dialogue.

IV. Date and Location

(I)Application Deadline
June 21, 2026 (Sunday), 11:59 p.m. (Taiwan Time, UTC+8). Late applications will not be considered.

(II)Workshop Schedule and Location
November 9-14, 2026 (6 days total) – National Museum of Taiwan Literature, Tainan.

V. Eligibility and Target Intake

A total of 20 participants will be admitted. Applicants aged 18 and over, from Taiwan and overseas, with a passion for translating Taiwan literature into English are welcome to apply, including emerging translators, working professionals, and undergraduate/graduate students from both domestic and international backgrounds.  Applicants are required to complete and submit translation samples based on texts provided by the organizer as reference materials.

VI. Participation Fees

(I)All expenses during the workshop will be fully covered by the organizer, including:

1. All course fees
2. Lunch, insurance, 5 nights’ accommodation

(II)Partial Transportation Subsidies Provided by the Organizer (Reimbursement provided upon submission of valid proof of purchase.)

1. Currently Enrolled Students (Domestic and International):

Workshop participants with valid student status, upon submission of certificate of enrollment, are eligible for full reimbursement of train fares to and from Tainan on Taiwan Railway, up to the fare of a Tze-Chiang Limited Express ticket. Participants who wish to travel by Taiwan High-Speed Rail will need to cover the fare difference themselves.

2. Participants Residing Overseas:

Participants travelling from overseas are eligible for partial reimbursement of air travel cost as follows:
 

• Participants from Asian countries: up to NT$15,000 per person
  Participants from non-Asian countries: up to NT$30,000 per person
   

3. Dual Eligibility:
   Participants who qualify under both categories above are eligible to receive both subsidies.

VII. Course Outline

Key highlights of this year’s workshop program include:

(I) Creative concept shared by Taiwan writers, complemented by mentor-led, hands-on translation practice.

(II) Panel discussions on translating and publishing Taiwan literature, including translation practice, publishing market trends, and literary translator career development.

(III) Guided tours of Tainan city, literary and cultural walks, and visits to exhibitions at the NMTL.

(IV) Visits to places of literary and cultural heritage in Tainan and neighboring cities, offering participants an opportunity to explore the diverse voices and cultural backgrounds of Taiwan literature.

V. Mentor Introduction

Jeremy Tiang

Jeremy Tiang has translated over 30 books from Chinese, including novels by Lo Yi-Chin, Huang Chong-Kai, Zhang Yueran, Shuang Xuetao and Yeng Pway Ngon. He also writes and translates plays, including the bilingual Salesman之死, which won the 2024 Obie Award for Outstanding New Play. His novel State of Emergency won the Singapore Literature Prize, and he is the co-editor with Dr. Kavita Bhanot of Violent Phenomena: 21 Essays on Translation. From 2021 to 2025, he served as a mentor for the Workshops for Translating Taiwan Literature, jointly organized by the National Museum of Taiwan Literature and the British Centre for Literary Translation (BCLT). Originally from Singapore, he now lives in New York City.

Dennis Zhou

DENNIS ZHOU is a writer and editor based in New York City. He has edited fiction for The New Yorker and The Paris Review, where he currently serves as Senior Editor. Writers he has worked with include Han Kang, Hiromi Kawakami, Chigozie Obioma, Gwendoline Riley, Joan Silber, Shuang Xuetao, David Szalay, Yan Lianke, and Yu Hua. Dennis is the recipient of a 2025 Robert B. Silvers Work-in-Progress Grant and a 2021 Fulbright fellowship to Taiwan, and his own writing about books, film, and visual art has appeared in publications including The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, and The New York Times Magazine.

IX. Application Process

Step 1
Download the application form from the NMTL website (www.nmtl.gov.tw) or the Arts and Cultural Activities platform (藝文活動平台) (https://reurl.cc/0mR7bb). Complete the application in English, including translation samples.

Step 2
Fill in your personal information and upload the following as instructed:

• Application form: Filename "Application Form_Applicant Name" (please upload as a PDF)
• Translation works: Along with the required translation sample, applicants must submit relevant Chinese into English literary translation works (published or unpublished). Please upload these files using the format "Author_WorkTitle_Applicant Name"
• Proof of enrollment (for current students): Please upload a verification document with the filename "Proof_of_Enrollment_Applicant Name"

X. Application Guidelines

(I) All application documents must be submitted in English, except for Chinese names.

(II) Please use a valid email address, as all notifications will be sent via email.

(III) Selection results will be sent via email by August 31, 2026.

XI. Important Notes

(I) Applicants are advised to ensure, prior to submitting their application, that they are eligible to independently obtain a visa for entry into Taiwan. If offered a place to the workshop, the organizer will issue an official letter of acceptance for visa application purposes.

(II) Selected participants are required to attend the entire workshop and participate in all course activities arranged by the organizer. Participants must submit feedback forms after the event.

(III) Domestic participants must pay a deposit of NT$3,000, which will be fully refunded upon full attendance. No refund will be issued for partial or incomplete participation. International participants are exempt from the deposit but must sign a letter of commitment. Unless approved by the organizer due to special circumstances, airfare subsidies will not be provided for incomplete participation. Transportation subsidies for eligible participants will be processed according to actual reimbursement standards.

(IV) This workshop is non-profit in nature. The organizer provides accommodation for participants (hotels or guesthouses, primarily in twin rooms shared by two participants. Room assignments will be made according to participants’ biological sex.).

(V) Application form must be completed by the applicant, ensuring no involvement in illegal activities or infringement of others' rights. The use of generative AI tools to assist in writing, translation, or reproduction of the content is strictly prohibited. In the case of  false information or violations, the organizer reserves the right to revoke the selection.

(VI) The organizer reserves the right to increase or adjust the number of selected participants depending on application status.

(VII) Photography and videography will be conducted during the workshop for future promotional use. Please notify in advance if you do not consent.

(VIII) For matters not covered in these guidelines, the organizer holds the right to interpret and amend the rules.  In the event of government announcements regarding work or school suspension due to weather or other force majeure, the workshop will be postponed, with new dates announced separately.
