Chen Kuo-Chan (1937–2024) was born in Xishi Village, Jhutian Township, Pingtung County. Deeply immersed in temple culture and folk beliefs from an early age, the architecture and everyday life surrounding the local Cifong Temple became a vital source of inspiration for his art. During his studies, he was mentored by several renowned artists and engaged in creative exchange with pioneers of Taiwanese printmaking, shaping his distinctive artistic style.
Renowned for his copperplate intaglio techniques, Chen masterfully combined etching, mezzotint, and aquatint to create dramatic light and shadow effects, along with delicate textures. From 1980 to 1982, he received the highest honor at the Taiwan Provincial Art Exhibition for three consecutive years and was granted permanent exemption from jury review.
Curated under the theme “The History of the People・The People in History”, this exhibition features 40 selected prints from the National Museum of History’s collection. It highlights Chen’s pivotal role in postwar Taiwanese printmaking and his lasting contributions to art education, technical experimentation, and social engagement. The exhibition also incorporates net-zero carbon emissions strategies in its design, materials, and educational outreach, embodying sustainable values and encouraging visitors to reflect on the interconnectedness of art, environment, and society.
Through Chen Kuo-Chan’s rich and profound printmaking works, we are invited to revisit the spiritual thread of Taiwanese print art and pay tribute to an artist who faithfully etched the life of his land and people.
