The Brush as a Sword, the World as a Scroll: Aspirations Reaching the Sky
Exhibition Details
Artists: Kong Zhao-Shun, Li Zai-Qian, Shi Chun-Mao, Guo Cheng-Qiao, and Fan Xiang-Bin
Dates: January 1, 2026, to February 28, 2026
Venue: National Hsinchu Living Arts Center (新竹生活美學館)
Calligraphy has evolved throughout the ages, integrating masters’ personal philosophies and the spirit of the time to create a sublime aesthetic realm where both formal canon and boundless expressive resonance are realized. As the year draws to a close, we are honored to gather five renowned masters who present their artistic world created by their brushes.
Artist Profile
Kong Zhao-Shun (孔昭順) is proficient in Clerical (隸書), Regular (楷書), and Cursive Scripts (草書), dedicating many years to calligraphy education and passionately promoting its beauty.
Li Zai-Qian (李再鈐), National Award for Arts Laureate, renowned primarily for his sculpture, exhibits calligraphic pieces rich in philosophical reflections and casual notes. These works possess a vivid, painterly quality that reflects his benevolent outlook on life.
Shi Chun-Mao (施春茂) developed a passion for ink painting and calligraphy from childhood, later devoting himself wholeheartedly to calligraphy education. His work skillfully integrates the pictorial forms of Oracle Bone (甲骨文) and Seal Scripts (篆書), conveying a raw energy akin to a thunderclap in the primordial void while projecting rich modernity.
Guo Cheng-Qiao (郭成樵) is a painter and calligrapher native to Hsinchu. Many of the couplets and plaques adorning the surrounding marketplace walls are his creations, viewed by many as an act of spontaneous, unburdened creation.
Fan Xiang-Bin (樊湘濱) is a retired professor, recognized for tirelessly cultivating countless art teachers across Taiwan. Proficient in the Liu Gongquan style (柳公權體), he often uses contemporary song lyrics as the textual basis for his brushworks, achieving a fusion of modern rhythm and ancient sensibility, reflecting a spirit that transcends mere formality.
Digital Interaction: The Re-Creation of the Universe in Calligraphy
While the artistic temperaments of the five masters are diverse, this exhibition integrates AI interactive technology to blend their spiritual resonance. Through digital media, the team synthesizes the five artists' biographies and presents interactive electronic Spring Couplets, thereby propelling the art of calligraphy from 2D forms into 3D dimensions. Spectators are invited to immerse themselves—like an eagle soaring freely—in the masters' artistic realm. Here, they can actively explore the fusion of the artists’ life experiences and aesthetic pursuits, examine the nuances of their brushwork, and ultimately achieve a profound and enriching artistic connection.
