Creating the Future with Art - 2021 International Symposium on Children's Education in the Art Museum.

(Purpose)

(The Future of Museums: Recover and Reimagine)。

Various cultural infrastructure is flourishing in Taoyuan these years. In particular, the establishment of Taoyuan Museum of Fine Arts (TMoFA) carries the aspiration of becoming a whole new beacon of culture. Aside from the new hardware, the citizenry of Taoyuan City are the youngest population among the six municipalities in Taiwan in terms of average age. Hence, promoting children’s art education via art museum becomes a vital issue as well.

Nevertheless, the world has been facing the challenge of COVID-19 since 2020. The epidemic has severely impeded the economic and social developments of countries worldwide, hindering interactions among community and people. Many artistic and cultural activities have also been suspended due to epidemic prevention. Fortunately, the situation has been well controlled in Taiwan. Through both international symposium for exchanges, online and offline, we aim to rekindle conversations on children's art education between art museums at home and abroad. Thus, Taoyuan Museum of Fine Arts especially invites Professor LEE Ching-Fang as our guest curator as well as scholars from Singapore, Korea, Japan, U.S.A., and Taiwan to engage thematic sharing and dialogues, reviving the exchange, interaction, and mutual understanding of art museums around the globe on the philosophy and methodology for children's art education.

The theme of the 2021 International Museum Day is: The Future of Museums: Recover and Reimagine. Hence, as a social art education institution, an art museum ought to think simultaneously about what kind of “future” it can “create” for children through the learning of “art” practices? In the face of the impact from the epidemic, how can we sustain opportunities for children to continue partake in art activities? Also, in light of the various stringent challenges for the survival in the contemporary society, what creative thinking and problem-solving abilities can an art museum construct for our children via art education? Meanwhile, in this age of advanced information and technology, social development becomes ever more complicated. An art museum thus needs to seek resource sharing and collaboration through international exchanges so as to exert its influence on art education.

Therefore, the purposes of this Symposium are as follows. First, it is to explore art museum’s planning in thematic content for children’s learning and methodology to execute education programs as well as features of instructional media in diverse social and cultural contexts through sharing of the cognitive development theory on art and art museums’ practices and cases of children art education. Second, it endeavors to capture how art museums and art education in schools share resources as well as the mechanism and implementation for art education collaboration between the two. Third, it probes into how art museums foster friendly and effective art learning resources and environments for children, including the production and application of software, as well as hardware equipment, such as the design and planning of immersive spaces and learning environments. Fourth, with the idea of the contemporary educational philosophy that emphasizes the learner at the core, it delves into whether children's works of art should be exhibited and, if so, the possible methods for such exhibition.

(Scope)

The four themes are proposed as follows:
