Lan Shui is renowned for his abilities as an orchestral builder and for his passion in commissioning, premiering and recording new works by leading Asian composers. As Music Director of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra for over twenty years, American Record Review noted that Shui has “turned a good regional orchestra into a world-class ensemble that plays its heart out at every concert”. Together they made several acclaimed tours to Europe, Asia and the United States and appeared for the first time at the BBC Proms in September 2014. As of January 2019, Shui steps down from his post in Singapore and takes on the position of Principal Guest Conductor of the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra.

Important engagements for the 18/19 season include concerts with Hangzhou Philharmonic in his hometown of Hangzhou, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra and a return to the opera pit for Zhou Long’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Madame White Snake at the Hong Kong Arts Festival. Aside from his busy schedule in Asia, this season he makes his debut with the Orchestre National de France in Paris.
