"From the Collection of the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts : Beginnings, Forever" attempts to explore the value and significance of works created in the early stage of photographers’ careers. The works displayed in this exhibition have been carefully chosen from K・MoPA’s collection of approximately 10,000 photographs. Each of these works was created by photographers before they turned 35 years old, and span about 120 years from 1898 to 2016. In total, 340 photographs by 74 photographers are displayed in this exhibition. Apart from the works acquired through K・MoPA’s Young Portfolio program over the last 20 years, the exhibition also includes precious original works that were created by international photographers who have made a name for themselves in the history of photography, as well as works that epitomize aspects of the history of Japanese post-war photography.

It is a commonly held view in the discipline of art history that you cannot study an artist without first reviewing her early creations if you are to gain a glimpse into her original artistic ambition. The works created in an artist’s early career can be deemed the foundation of a lifetime of creation and are that on which artistic language and personal style are grounded. For artists, their early works are the place to which they must constantly return, and somewhere of belonging to hold dear. Works created at a time when perceptiveness was at its acutest constitute the most important “origin” of artists. With the accumulation and maturity of creative experience, the perpetuity hidden in such works of “origin” remains perceivable to viewers, whether or not the artistic forms in their later works have since changed. Even though the works in this exhibition were all created by photographers in their early years, many are widely considered to be brilliant representative masterpieces in a lifetime of photographic endeavor.

While at the same time expanding their methods of photographic expression, the photographers in this exhibition were also attempting to turn over a new page of history by using the power of images to record the times in which they found themselves. It is hoped that through this exhibition of excellent works by renowned photographers of recent centuries working in the East and the West, viewers will be able to glimpse how young photographers of different generations have used their abundant energy and sharp sensibilities to reflect domestic and international realities and people’s states of mind, creating images that capture the zeitgeist and the avant-garde of their times. It is also hoped that this exhibition can be an opportunity that inspires young artists and the public to further explore their creative potential, the culture of photography, and diversity in contemporary practices of photography.
